5 of 8 days

2nd Hammer night ride last night, this ended up being my 5th ride out of 8 days, wicked block of training leading up to Velocity Race.

I had 4 days off work where we planned on visiting Marc in Whitefish, but with +5 and rain / snow in the forecast we decided to stay put.

So Marn and I took advantage of this time, she practiced yoga everyday where I jumped on the bike.

Several days on my own around Surprise Corner,Tunnel, Minnewanka and Johnston Lakes...hills hills and more hills. TT set up on trainer with 2 x 15 mins & 2 x 5 mins.

Headed out with Robbie and Keith last night around Tunnel deciding to stick close to town as there were snow squalls every 10 mins, happen to meet 8 guys coming in from Canmore. Good grind with the boys from there on.

Legs are quite shattered, must rest now.

New team kit arrived and is slick looking!

1 day of work left and 4.5 months Paternity :)

Some pics

Why the serious looks?

Wicked ride outside today - Tunnel Rd with multiple variations down and around Minnewanka and Johnson Lakes then back around Tunnel. Bluebird out made for beauty views. Great to get in 4 hrs of hard riding in 3 days, keep the trend going this week as have 4 days OFF, back for 2 shifts and then 4.5 months Paternity :)

1st Hammernight

The skies cleared after the morning snow in town. Drove to Canmore where 8 of us then headed out for 1st club hammer night of the year.

Hwy 1 to Banff around Minnewanka Loop, over around Tunnel Mtn and then Hwy 1 back to Canmore. Great grind with plenty of attacks all over the place - legs were burning!

Great group of guys with similar abilities made for a beauty ride. This is the closest to race pace format one can get, hope to make every Thursday this year.

Oh Alberta spring weather

April weather can be hit or miss, unfortunately we are on the mis side lately.

Speed Theory's Prairie Roubaix race was cancelled April 17th due to cold and snow. I was in a bike course with their Prez Trevor on Saturday when he made the call to cancel. Unfortunate as they have pre paid for porta potties, ambulance etc with no refund. That is the gamble of hosting an event in April, last year mid teens where two years ago a TT at Race City Speedway was cancelled due to snow..

Was looking forward to the race for the 2.75 hrs of time in the legs and general more road racing experience and that we would have had 6 RMCC guys at the start line, would have been a riot!

Was on trainer last Thursday and Sunday nights with varying interval lengths and cadence to keep the legs firing. Unreal how long a 1 minute intervals seem some times, look down at watch and still 30 secs to go.

Supposed to have our first club Hammernight this Thursday, hopefully the forecasted +1 and snow will change.

Need a trip to Arizona or Maui to ride, jealous of all the fellow RMCC members down there currently  :)

First ride of year outside

Out on the road bike last Sunday for the first time. Fun 120 km's on the 1A to Lake Louise and back with Robbie, Keith and Soldan.

Felt well especially on the hills, biking to work all winter and riding the 10 minute hill home has shown benefits.

Saw an enormous Grizzly near Baker Creek, largest bear I have ever seen! This pic is from Richard who was on the road as well that day http://yfrog.com/h0qgxeij

Great to see all the people out enjoying the weather.

Had a wicked spin Friday night on the trainer
Pick a hard pace for a 3.5 mins interval
1 min sitting
30 sec out of saddle
2 min back down in saddle
Rest 3 minutes
another 3 intervals
Repeat another set
ouch

Prairie Roubaix race this Sunday but a hurtin forecast of snow and freezing temps 3 days leading up??

Boys on bikes and trucks

Seth could barely touch the pedals of his bike last summer, today was a different story. Up and down our block a few times with Seth powering the pedals on his own, so funny!

Rory sitting in truck first time

Boys sleeping together, too cute!

Biking or lack of

With working full time and raising two kids, reality is setting in this past week with my lack of time to bike. I accept this lack of 'personal time' as part of family life and would NOT change a thing as I am so blessed to have the wife I do and 2 precious boys. My less is more training plan worked last summer for the most part but riding 1-2 hrs / week the entire last month is catching up with needing the miles in the legs to compete in a 2.75 race next week and a stage race mid May.

Hard not to be envious of friends riding to Lake Louise and back and hours on end around tunnel and minnewanka. But they are single or do not have families.

Have to keep hammering out the time I have on the trainer while hoping to hit the pavement here soon.

Love my new bike fit, feel so comfortable while on the trainer this week.

Have started my plyometric jumps / squats to increase the fast twitch fiber strength, the most advantageous 3 minute work out hands down.

Paternity Leave

Long story short, I am taking 4.5 months Paternity leave starting May 1st. One of the hardest decisions ever made but had to happen for various reasons.

Will be quite the challenge for me with a 7 month old still breastfeeding and 2.5 year old crazy little dude. Plenty of stops at the gardens for Marn to feed Rory with introducing other food slowly. The bonding between the boys will be unforgettable, just will be a tonne on the go.

Rory's first food

We gave Rory rice cereal for the first time this week. So funny seeing his face expression trying to figure out what it was. Seth was too cute feeding him, he was so excited to help out.
