A fair amount of this in biking news lately

Carb depleting articles are more common these days. Makes sense to put your body in carb depletion for say stage races where you will be depleted but this way your body has experienced it before so more adaptable to the lack of energy.....in theory. Hear 4 or 5 days out of a race to try a depletion ride but eat plenty following the ride. But definitely not for the beginner cyclist to try.
